Wednesday feels almost as much like a Harry Potter spinoff as it does an Addams Family spinoff, but one line in particular is a little too close to the wizard film series. Jenna Ortega has become the new queen of horror with her roles in the Scream franchise and the Netflix series following Morticia and Gomez Addams‘ dark and mischievous daughter. Wednesday’s parents enroll her at Nevermore Academy after she gets expelled from her previous school for using piranhas to defend her brother against bullies. At Nevermore, Wednesday sets out to solve two mysteries: a killing spree and an old mystery from when her parents attended the school.
Unfortunately, Wednesday’s investigations thrust her into conflict with Nevermore headmistress Larissa Weems more than she would like, as Weems is set on preventing Wednesday learning anything more about the deaths occurring in town. In Wednesday episode 6, Jenna Ortega’s gloomy amateur sleuth finds herself on Weems’ bad side when she becomes embroiled in the tragic death of Jericho’s mayor. From the supernatural elements to the friendships, Wednesday is very similar to Harry Potter, but one line Weems says to Wednesday in episode 6 feels like it was taken straight from Professor McGonagall.
Wednesday Copies A Famous Harry Potter McGonagall Line
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry, Hermoine, and Ron witness Katie Bell getting cursed by an opal necklace she gets from Rosmerta, who was also cursed by the necklace thanks to Draco Malfoy. Because they are witnesses, they must talk to Professor McGonagall who says to them, “why is it when something happens, it is always you three?” McGonagall is referring to how the Golden Trio always find themselves at the center of problems at Hogwarts. Ron tells his teacher, “Believe me, Professor, I’ve been asking myself the same question for six years.” In Wednesday episode 6, Weems says almost the exact same thing to Ortega’s character.
Wednesday is investigating Garrett Gates’ murder and hides in the trunk of Mayor Walker’s car, hoping to learn more about the mystery. When Walker gets out of his car, he is struck by another vehicle, and even Sheriff Galpin is suspicious about why Wednesday is always so close to the bad things occurring in town. When Wednesday gets back to Nevermore, Weems asks her, “how do you manage to end up at the center of every terrible thing that happens around here?” Wednesday even has a snarky response like Ron had to McGonagall’s question. “Incredible luck,” Wednesday replies.
Wednesday’s Harry Potter Influence Is Bigger Than One Line
This similar dialogue solidifies the connection between Wednesday and Harry Potter, however, there are many other aspects that Wednesday has in common with the film series. Both take place at schools meant for students with supernatural abilities, and the students are separated by their abilities. In Wednesday, those without supernatural abilities are called normies, which is very close to what Harry Potter calls muggles.
The Poe Cup mirrors the Triwizard Tournament, Wednesday and Harry both follow a prophecy, and Bianca fills the Draco Malfoy role of a snobbish bully who endures a toxic relationship with their parents. Nevermore, meanwhile, is one talking hat away from being Hogwarts. While Wednesday has its own unique differences, the line from Weems in episode 6 feels a little too directly influenced by the Harry Potter franchise.
