Currently appearing in his first season of Below Deck, Tyler Walker has openly discussed his sexuality on-air while also admitting that this conversation had yet to occur within his own conservative home, a matter that has now been resolved. In a recent Below Deck episode, viewers met Trussy, a drag persona of one of their charter guests, John. As Trussy performed on deck, Tyler cheered loudly, leading to a confessional afterward of the stew discussing his sheltered upbringing in a Methodist high school, labeling it as a very “homophobic environment.” At the time of filming, Tyler had yet to tell his family he’s gay.
Taking the place of fired stew Camille Lamb, Below Deck‘s Tyler Walker joined the crew, openly discussing his sexuality and concurrent struggle with coming out to his family. Now in an interview with E! News, Tyler shared that he started these discussions, emphasizing that “it was difficult.” In terms of the reactions, Tyler explained, “I think my mom took it the hardest. I think she struggled to understand it the most.” While stressing that the two of them are still close, he added, “There’s still things that we have to iron out and more open discussions. I think having that initial conversation, she is more open now to speaking about certain things.”
Below Deck’s Tyler Walker Offers Advice To Those Struggling To Coming Out
Throughout the Below Deck franchise, many LGBTQ+ guests and crew have been featured, further bringing needed conversations to the forefront of many homes, including Tyler’s. Before filming, Tyler came out to his sister, who helped him mediate conversations with their parents prior to the airing of his sexuality-embracing episodes. For those who are struggling to do the same, Tyler advises, “Put yourself first. You’re the reason you want to come out to whoever it is so that you can be happier.” However, Tyler cautions, “If you don’t feel comfortable in that situation or you’re not ready, don’t do it just yet. Make sure that you do it on your terms.”
When the bright-eyed 24-year-old stew entered midway through Below Deck season 10, he was working underneath Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck Mediterranean, due to a health emergency by Captain Lee Rosbach. Captain Sandy had nothing but praise for Tyler regarding his positive attitude and his eager work ethic while onboard motor yacht St. David. Once Captain Lee returned, he also spoke positively of the flow within the interior department now that Tyler had joined the crew. With the approval of two well-known captains, Tyler clearly has a bright career ahead of him in yachting. Hopefully, this will not be his final season on Below Deck.
Casting male crew members for reality shows has not always been an easy task, as seen in past Below Deck seasons filled with misogynistic attitudes, drunken advances, and physical altercations towards female colleagues. Tyler, however, is the opposite. With a calm voice and a kinship to all onboard, Tyler seems to be the glue that the interior department was missing. That said, his recent conversations within his conservative family also proves that Tyler isn’t afraid of having hard discussions, which could play out well in the future should he be asked to return for Below Deck season 11.
