Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are a hilarious buddy comedy duo in the Shanghai Noon movies, but franchise’s intended third installment, Shanghai Dawn, has never gotten off the ground. Shanghai Noon debuted in 2000, with Jackie Chan’s Chinese Imperial Guard Chon Wang venturing to America to rescue the kidnapped Princess Pei Pei. He also crosses paths with outlaw Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson), who joins forces with him on his mission.
Chon Wang and Roy O’Bannon reunited for another wacky adventure in 2003’s Shanghai Knights, traveling from the Old West to Victorian England with Chon’s sister Chon Lin (Fann Wong). Shanghai Dawn was also announced and discussed at various points since the release of Shanghai Knights. However, despite Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights being highlights of Jackie Chan’s Hollywood career, Shanghai Dawn has sadly yet to be realized.
There Hasn’t Been An Update On Shanghai Noon 3 Since 2017
Shanghai Dawn was initially announced during the 2003 release of Shanghai Knights, with the movie to take Chon and Roy on a globetrotting adventure to different countries and historical landmarks. Despite this, there was little public movement on Shanghai Dawn until 2015, when it was announced as moving ahead with MGM Studios. Jared Hess would also board as director of Shanghai Dawn in 2016, while Wilson spoke more on the development of Shanghai Dawn exclusively to Screen Rant in 2017.
Unfortunately, that would be the last bit of solid news of Shanghai Dawn, with both Chan and Wilson working on various other projects in the years since. Since Shanghai Knights, Owen Wilson has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role Mobius on the Disney+ series Loki. Meanwhile, Chan has mainly worked in the Chinese film industry with the odd movie in the West like 2017’s The Foreigner (with Jackie Chan’s death-defying stunts are being far less frequent). There has also been talk of Chan returning as Inspector Lee for Rush Hour 4, which all begs the question of what the ultimate fate of Shanghai Dawn will be.
Will Shanghai Noon 3 Still Happen?
With Chan and Wilson’s involvement in different projects, scheduling would be the most pertinent problem to be solved in actually realizing Shanghai Dawn. Moreover, while Jackie Chan is showing no indication of retiring with his involvement in action-comedies like Ride On and New Police Story 2, he is also nearing his seventies. Between that and Shanghai Knights having been released two decades ago, Shanghai Dawn‘s story would inevitably have to be written to follow a much older Chon Wang and Roy O’Bannon in what would likely be their last rodeo. That said, Jackie Chan’s style of comedy would still fit older versions of Chon and Roy perfectly.
The comedic chemistry of Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson made the Shanghai Noon movies hilarious Western martial arts comedy romps. It would certainly be a shame if Chon Wang and Roy O’Bannon were to never have the chance to go on one more buddy comedy adventure in Shanghai Dawn. Hopefully, the stars in Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson’s schedules are able to align for Shanghai Dawn to finally happen in the future.
