Dr. Charles is one of Chicago Med‘s most popular characters, and the actor that plays him is a celebrated performer with scores of recognizable credits. Co-created by TV legend Dick Wolf, Chicago Med is a wildly popular spinoff of Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., and together the shows form a larger shared universe with tons of characters. Chicago Med has often been praised for its writing and unique spin on the hospital drama formula, but it is the show’s robust cast of characters that truly makes it stand out. Dr. Daniel Charles is just one small part of a much larger ensemble, but he is nevertheless a compelling figure.
Appearing in over 100 episodes of the long-running TV series, Chicago Med‘s Dr. Charles is a fan-favorite character unlike most others in hospital dramas because he is tasked with providing psychiatric care for his fellow doctors. Often shown to be unwaveringly loyal to the patients in his care, Dr. Charles usually sacrifices his well-being in favor of those he is treating. Dr. Charles’s background in psychiatry makes him uniquely suited to help others, but he struggles to keep his own life together. With such a robust character to work with, the part of Dr. Charles couldn’t go to just any run-of-the-mill TV actor.
Dr. Charles From Chicago Med Is Played By Oliver Platt, A Famous Character Actor
One of the most seasoned veterans in the cast of Chicago Med, Oliver Platt brought his character actor strengths to the table when he was tapped to play Dr. Charles. Shows like Chicago Med often rely on their ensemble to carry the procedural stories that the series tells, and someone like Platt can deliver any type of character, as seen with his other roles. The Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominee made his big screen debut in 1988’s Married to the Mob and spent most of his cinematic career playing memorable supporting roles. Also in 1988, Platt played the unforgettable role of Lutz in Working Girl.
He then bounced between dramatic and comedic roles with relative ease throughout the ’90s in films like Flatliners, Indecent Proposal, The Three Musketeers, and Dr. Dolittle. Platt’s greatest strength as an actor has always been his ability to play lovable goofballs and vile heels with the same ease, and yet he always managed to find the emotional heart of the character that made them feel more real. Even if Dr. Charles only shows off his good side, the character is a maelstrom of emotions that aren’t necessarily apparent on the surface.
Platt’s Character In The West Wing Is Intelligent Like Dr. Charles In Chicago Med
Despite his having a strong career on the big screen, many of Platt’s best parts came when he starred in television series. Remembered as one of Platt’s best roles, he appeared as Oliver Babish in eight episodes of The West Wing and turned in a tour de force performance that earned him an Emmy nomination. Serving as shrewd legal counsel to President Bartlet, Babish’s uncompromising nature made him prickly but effective. Like the character of Dr. Charles on Chicago Med, Babish did what he thought was right, even if that wasn’t the most popular thing to do. Though the characters’ personalities were disparate, Oliver Platt found the humanity in both.
