Some of the best shows on HBO Max will be wrapping up or returning in April. While there has been some controversy around HBO Max removing some fan-favorite shows from the platform, this month is a reminder that there are still plenty of great shows available as well. The amount of new shows being added is a little more scarce than usual, but some of April’s incoming titles include the most highly anticipated shows currently on television. This includes the end of acclaimed series Barry and the arrival of anticipated limited series Love & Death.
10 Barry (2018-2023)
Barry is just one of several shows ending in 2023 with the fourth and final season premiering in April. The show about Bill Hader’s hitman who dreams of starting over has gotten increasingly dark and disturbing as it went along while still holding onto its sense of humor. The brilliant third season ended with a thrilling cliffhanger with Barry’s violence and detached view of the world finally catching up with him, landing him in prison. It sets the stage for an exciting final season that will likely continue the hilarious, bloody, and fascinating tale of one of television’s most complex protagonists.
9 The Winchesters (2022)
The spinoff of the beloved CW show Supernatural, The Winchesters season 1 will be available on HBO Max for fans to check out. The show is set years before Sam and Dean even existed, following their parents as they begin their adventure of looking to save the world from evil while also beginning their own touching love story. Fans who miss the original series will want to check out this spinoff as The Winchesters features Supernatural characters and leaves the door open for some unexpected connections between the two stories.
8 Kung Fu (2021-)
Based on the classic TV series starring David Carradine, Kung Fu is the story of Nicky, a Harvard dropout who decides to use her kung fu skills and training to become a protector for her community. The CW show is an exciting story of a likable hero and a quest to save the day even if the stakes are kept relatively small. Season 3 of the show will be available on HBO Max in April which will continue Nicky’s kung fu journey as she takes on new and old enemies.
7 Titans (2018-2023)
The cancelation of Titans on HBO Max was a blow to many fans as some DC shows continue to be removed with the DCU moving forward. April marks the true beginning of the end for the superhero series with the mid-season premiere of the fourth and final season. There are still a lot of plotlines to be tied up while the arrival of Tim Drake’s Robin has a lot of fans excited. Though the cancelation came as a shock, there is still hope that the show can deliver a satisfying conclusion as the series is cut short.
6 A Black Lady Sketch Show (2019-)
One of the funniest shows on HBO Max returns for its fourth season. A Black Lady Sketch show is quickly establishing itself as one of the best sketch comedy shows of all time with hilarious, clever, and outlandish segments poking fun at a wide variety of subjects. The cast of hilarious female comedy stars elevates the material while there has also been an amazing collection of actors cameoing in the series, from Angela Bassett to Issa Rae to Yvette Nicole Brown.
5 Clone High (2002-2003)
Those people anxiously awaiting the Clone High revival coming sometime this year now have the perfect opportunity to revisit the original series. From Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Clone High is an animated comedy set in a high school filled with the clones of famous and influential historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln and JFK. Watching these icons of history dealing with school and teenage issues is great fun even if the comedy was canceled after one season. With the revival on the way, fans can now enjoy looking back at the series knowing that there is finally more on the way.
HBO Max has a lot of great documentaries for subscribers to check out along with all the narrative series. April sees the return of one particularly shocking and wild docuseries with 100 Foot Wave. The documentary explores the mission of Garrett McNamara and his attempt to conquer a 100-foot wave. It is a stirring journey of one man following his ambitious goals with the suspense and excitement of seeing if he can pull it off. Season 2 of the show will premiere on HBO Max in April following McNamara and other ambitious surfers from around the world.
3 Doctor Who: Power Of The Doctor (2022)
With the 60th anniversary special of Doctor Who arriving later this year and introducing Ncuti Gatwa’s new Doctor, fans can check out Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor to prepare. This feature-length Doctor Who episode aired in 2022 and marked the end of Jodie Whittaker’s version of The Doctor. The adventure finds her attempting to prevent an attack that would wipe the Doctor and Earth from existence. The special episode is not just an epic send-off but also sets up the next era of Doctor Who with an ending that thrilled fans.
2 Somebody Somewhere (2022-)
Though Somebody Somewhere didn’t find a huge audience just yet, it still has time to be discovered with season 2 coming to HBO Max in April. The series stars Bridget Everett as a woman mourning the loss of her sister and being back in her small hometown. She is able to find a sense of purpose and belonging by joining a group of misfits for choir practice. With the second season, the show looks to continue its charming tone that mixes sadness and humor while following its endearing characters through a grounded human story.
1 Love & Death (2023)
Though Wanda Maximoff’s future in the MCU is clear, it’s welcome seeing Elizabeth Olsen stepping outside of the superhero genre for some compelling new projects. Love & Death finds Olsen bringing a strange and disturbing true-crime story to HBO Max. The limited series explores the suburban life of housewife Candy Montgomery (Olsen) whose affair with a married neighbor (Jesse Plemons) eventually leads to murder. Olsen has a real talent for playing the various layers of a character and Candy looks to be one of her most challenging and interesting characters yet.
