Warning: This post contains spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania! One popular Kang the Conqueror theory suggests that the Multiverse Saga villain could be transformed in Avengers: Secret Wars. The future of the MCU was revealed at 2022’s San Diego Comic Con by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, revealing that the Multiverse Saga would culminate in two epic crossover films, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. While many believe that Kang the Conqueror’s MCU story will conclude in The Kang Dynasty ahead of an incursion event in Secret Wars, one theory points to Kang’s last attempt at eliminating Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the Multiverse Saga’s final project.

Jonathan Majors debuted in the MCU as He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, in Phase 4’s Loki, before making an appearance as the Conqueror himself in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Variants of Kang are set to make several appearances in the MCU’s Phase 5 and 6 before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with the introduction of the Council of Kangs in Quantumania’s post-credits scene teasing the group as the primary villains for The Kang Dynasty. However, the storyline for Avengers: Secret Wars is still unclear, but it now seems that the version of Kang trapped in the Quantum Realm could have a very important role to play.

How Can Kang The Conqueror Become Secret Wars’ Beyonder?

the beyonder in marvel comics

The Beyonder, the mastermind of Marvel Comics’ 1984 Secret Wars crossover event, is one of Marvel’s most unusual characters. A being from outside the multiverse who had taken an interest in the superheroes and supervillains of Earth, who chooses to kidnap a large selection of both groups and force them to fight each other on Battleworld. One popular theory suggests that Marvel Studios won’t introduce the Beyonder to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, but rather Kang the Conqueror will be transformed into the Beyonder. This would be following Kang’s apparent death at the hands of Ant-Man and the Wasp in Quantumania.

Many speculate that Kang the Conqueror didn’t actually die at the end of Quantumania, since all that was seen was Kang being pulled into his malfunctioning Multiverse Power Core. While some believe that Kang the Conqueror will replace the Beyonder in Avengers: Secret Wars, one theory is that Kang’s prolonged exposure to the power of the multiverse will cause him to become the Beyonder, a being no longer tied to the confines of the multiverse. This would allow him to come back with a vengeance, and orchestrate the catastrophic events of Avengers: Secret Wars to finally succeed in his mission of multiversal destruction.

The Multiverse Saga Is Kang The Conqueror’s Story

There was confusion after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as to how Kang the Conqueror can be the Multiverse Saga’s big villain after his apparent demise. While the debut of the Council of Kangs quelled some of these concerns, the possibility of Kang the Conqueror’s return in the MCU’s future means that the Multiverse Saga will truly be his story, just as the Infinity Saga was for Thanos. It would be anticlimactic for Marvel Studios to kill off Kang in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, only to then release more projects in the Multiverse Saga, so Kang should also be featured as the main villain for Avengers: Secret Wars.

For the MCU’s Infinity Saga, the Mad Titan, Thanos, was built up gradually before making himself known to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War. However, Kang and his variants have already been an incredibly prominent threat in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, and will continue to expand as Phases 5 and 6 develop. Loki, one of Phase 4’s earliest projects, teased the idea of Kang the Conqueror with He Who Remains’ debut, so the Multiverse Saga should end with Kang in Avengers: Secret Wars too, perfectly book-ending his MCU career, rather than seeing him fall at the last hurdle.

The Beyonder Is Too Big To Debut In The Multiverse Saga

Having Kang the Conqueror become the Beyonder for Avengers: Secret Wars would save Marvel Studios the hassle of having to introduce yet another large-scale villain to the MCU in a very short timeframe. The mythos behind the Beyonder in Marvel Comics extends far beyond the borders of the multiverse, so there simply wouldn’t be enough time in the space between Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars to fully flesh-out the character. By transforming Quantumania’s Kang the Conqueror into the Beyonder in the MCU’s Phase 6, Marvel Studios can lean heavier on Kang’s thirst for revenge on the Avengers.

For the MCU, Marvel Studios appearing to be setting up a combination of the original 1984 Marvel Comics’ run of Secret Wars and the revamped 2015 Secret Wars, which saw two realities collide, leading to the destruction of both and the creation of Battleworld. The idea of incursions has been teased in MCU projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Quantumania, and this universal destruction connects better to Kang than it does to the comics’ Beyonder. Seeing Kang the Conqueror mastermind an incursion in the MCU that would wipe out the 616-universe would be far more powerful than spending too much time introducing the Beyonder.

Kang Becoming The Beyonder Can Be His Final Revenge

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania revealed that Kang the Conqueror’s ambition to cull the timelines of the multiverse, which he could easily succeed in if he is transformed into the Beyonder. Not only would he be able to cause multiversal destruction, but he would achieve his ultimate goal of eliminating the Avengers from the cosmos, something he must be more motivated to do after Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne left him for dead in the Quantum Realm. Quantumania ended with an impending sense of doom for Scott Lang, which could perhaps manifest itself in Kang’s return during Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Marvel Comics Secret Wars events saw many heroes from several different realities come together, which is rumored to be the case for the MCU too. This could mean that characters from Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, Sony’s Spider-Verse, and other Marvel properties not under the Marvel Studios umbrella could enter the MCU proper to battle in Secret Wars. Kang the Conqueror has been built up as such a monumental threat to the multiverse that it would probably take the combined might of all these heroes to defeat him, especially if he becomes Avengers: Secret Wars’ answer to the all-powerful Beyonder.
