Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Avatar: The Way of WaterAvatar: The Way of Water writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have elaborated on why Spider decided to save Quaritch at the end of the film. Following the climactic hand-to-hand underwater fight scene between Quaritch and Jake Sully, Spider discovers his biological father’s unconscious body on the ocean floor. Despite his intentions to destroy the Sully family and wipe out the Na’vi, Spider still saves Quaritch from certain doom, cementing him as a returning enemy in future Avatar films. Spider’s decision also puts his adoptive family in danger, which is sure to have consequences as the film series progresses.

In an interview with Variety, Jaffa and Silver explain why Spider decided to save Quaritch at the end of Avatar: The Way of Water despite his antagonistic goals. The duo says that they understand why audiences may react negatively to Spider’s decision to save his father, but his actions are in line with the themes the film is exploring. Check out what Jaffa and Silver had to say (via Variety):

“The movie allows Spider to explore these ambivalent feelings he’s having, and, I mean, I think it’s fine that the audience is like, ‘Don’t rescue him!’” Silver says. “But the idea that Spider is compelled to rescue Quaritch is interesting from a character point of view.”

Adds Jaffa, “It’s this father-son theme that we dive so deeply into — no pun intended.”

What Saving Quaritch Means For Spider’s Avatar Future

Who Is Spider Mom In Avatar The Way of Water

Jaffa and Silver’s explanation lines up with many of the thematic elements present in Avatar: The Way of Water. The dynamic of Jake and Neytiri’s family is the major focus of the film, as characters like Kiri and Lo’ak become more independent of their parents while also proving they can help Jake and Neytiri when danger arrives. James Cameron has expressed family as one of the major themes of Avatar: The Way of Water as well, with Spider and Quaritch’s tense relationship contributing to this theme as opposites of the close-knit Sullys. Despite his capture by his father, Spider still expresses levels of joy being around him, showing that he longs for a father figure in his life.

Quaritch also proves some level of care for his son at the end of the film when Neytiri threatens to kill Spider if Quaritch goes through with killing Kiri. After some hesitation, Quaritch lets Kiri go, exhibiting compassion for someone else that he otherwise has never expressed before in the film. Because he has seen humanity in his father no one else has, Spider’s different perspective on Quaritch may come into play when he returns as an antagonist in Avatar 3.

Spider expresses his allegiance to the Sully family and the Na’vi at the end of the film when he swims away from Quaritch after his father asks him to come with him. As the theme of family will likely continue to be explored in the next three Avatar films, Spider’s loyalties may begin to shift as he starts to see a more human side of his father. While it’s unclear what Quaritch’s plan is now that he has lost to Jake and lost his son, Avatar: The Way of Water sets up a future exploration of Quaritch that may show Spider a different side to his father.

Could Spider Redeem Quaritch In Avatar 3?

Spider saving Quaritch will certainly have big implications for the sequels, but perhaps not in the way that fans are expecting. The fact that Quaritch already killed Jake and Neytiri’s son Neteyam, it seems that saving Quaritch will just allow the villain to return to go after Jake and his family yet again. However, with James Cameron indicating that Spider’s role is important in the Avatar sequels, he could bring about a significant change in his father.

Quite surprisingly, Quaritch was shown to put Spider’s safety above his mission for revenge showing that he is not just a bloodthirsty killer. Cameron also said that Spider would serve as “the pivot point in between Quaritch and Jake.” This could mean that Spider holds the key to Quaritch’s redemption which could stop the endless blood feud between him and Jack. It might even open the possibility of them becoming allies in the sequels to come, something that seems impossible in Avatar: The Way of Water.
