Kyla-Drew co-starred in Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! as Sasha alongside Jamie Foxx, but she has also had a wealth of great roles outside the ill-fated Netflix original series. Airing for only one season on the streamer, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! follows a cosmetics brand owner (Foxx) who has to adjust to the sudden arrival of his teenage daughter. Kyla-Drew’s role as Sasha Dixon was quintessential teen angst, and she had strong chemistry with her TV dad. Despite that, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! failed to move the needle and was not well-received by critics or viewers.
Besides Foxx and Kyla-Drew, the show was stacked with TV veterans like David Allan Grier and Valente Rodriguez, and the cast of characters in Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! was likable enough to carry the typical sitcom premises. However, the show was also bogged down with clichéd humor, and it didn’t go far enough in exploring the complicated relationship between Sasha and her father. While it was likely that a second season could have expanded upon those relationships, Netflix opted to pull the plug after only one season with no reasons given. Fortunately for young Kyla-Drew, the failure of Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! hasn’t stopped her rise to fame.
Kyla-Drew’s Film Debut Was Prisoners (2013)
Kyla-Drew’s big screen debut was a lofty part for a nine-year-old. She played the role of Joy Birch in the brooding 2013 thriller Prisoners. Kyla-Drew’s character was one of two children kidnapped at the beginning of the story, and she gave a convincing performance as a child who lived through a disturbing ordeal. Acting alongside the likes of Viola Davis and Hugh Jackman, the young Kyla-Drew turned in a performance that was befitting a burgeoning child star. Despite only having a few scenes, Kyla-Drew was pivotal to the film’s plot, and she delivered in all of her moments on screen.
Before Kyla-Drew appeared in Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!, she had racked up an impressive set of credits for such a young actor. In the same year that she appeared in Prisoners, Kyla-Drew had a one-off appearance as Shandra in How I Met Your Mother, season 9, episode 10, “Mom and Dad.” She followed that up with brief appearances on such shows as Castle and Grey’s Anatomy over the next few years before landing a starring role in the series Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn as Mae Valentine in 2014.
Kyla-Drew Appeared In American Horror Stories After Dad Stop Embarrassing Me
Proving the crash of Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! had no ill effect on her career, Kyla-Drew was cast in an episode of American Horror Stories in 2022. Appearing as part of the cast of American Horror Stories, season 2, episode 5, “Bloody Mary,” Kyla-Drew played Maggie. In the episode, a group of teens attempts to summon Bloody Mary, and they pay a deadly price for their mistake. Though it wasn’t a groundbreaking role, it showed Kyla-Drew had entered a new phase in her career. Her role as Annie in the 2022 TV movie Cipher was another step toward more adult roles for the actor.
