Quick Links

The true mage class in the Beta for Diablo IV comes from the Sorcerer, whose best builds revolve around the player’s ability to manage their hefty Mana resource in conjunction with certain stats, skills, and other abilities. Thankfully, the Sorcerer’s possible builds are far more straightforward than the other classes available in the Beta since the class relies entirely on certain elemental magic paths. A class highly recommended for beginners of the series, the Sorcerer has plenty of options in their skills that undeniably create a strong character through the 26 available Skill Points players can use up to Level 25.

The Sorcerer can feel much like a glass cannon, with extremely high damage through an absurd Intelligence stat that defines the magic they cast. There are six groups of Skills that define this playable character class in Diablo 4, divided into Basic, Core, Defensive, Conjuration, Mastery, and Ultimate abilities. With each Skill having multiple upgrades players can invest in with their Skill Points, players are recommended to keep an eye out for passive Talents that could increase the effectiveness of attacks when allocating points.

The Best Weapons & Armor For Sorcerers

Diablo 4 Sorcerer Class Various Armor Sets Found in Beta Build of Game (Level 25 Restriction)

The only weapons players can use as the Sorcerer are two-handed Staffs or one-handed Wands. Acting as arcane focuses for magic, each weapon enhances the magic being cast, not dealing physical damage whatsoever. As a result of this simple application, players should look for weapons that deal as much magic damage as possible, emphasizing increasing Intelligence or Willpower stats.

Armor serves a much more important function during any Sorcerer build, as this class gains far more slots in their equipment for gems. As players upgrade or transmog their gear in Diablo IV, many pieces of the Sorcerer can be enhanced through gems that passively buff the character, ranging from boosts to Mana generation to extra damage. Resource Generation should be the number one focus for Sorcerer players when looking for armor sets, as this class has some of the most resource-expensive skills out of the other archetypes.

Ice Magic Build

Diablo 4 Beta Sorcerer Using Ice Magic Skill to Freeze Enemies and Give them Vulnerable Debuff

Skill

Description

Enhancement(s)

(4/5) Frost Bolt

Throw a bolt of frost at an enemy, dealing 39% damage and Chilling them for 13%.

  • Enhanced Frost Bolt – Frost Bolt has a 10% chance to explode on Chilled targets, hitting nearby enemies. Chance increased by 100% against frozen targets.
  • Flickering Frost Bolt – Frost Bolt makes Frozen enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds.

(4/5) Frozen Orb

An ability unlike anything in a Barbarian build from Diablo 4, this unleashes an orb that Chills for 34% and expels piercing shards dealing a total of 32% damage. Upon expiration, Frozen Orb explodes, dealing 29% damage and Chilling enemies for 9%.

  • Enhanced Frozen Orb – When cast above 50 Mana, Frozen Orb’s explosion damage is increased by x30%.
  • Destructive Frozen Orb – Frozen Orb’s explosion restores 5 Mana when hitting a Frozen enemy.

(3/5) Ice Armor

A Barrier of ice forms around you for 6 seconds, absorbing 21 damage. While Ice Armor is active, 10% of your Cold Damage dealt is added to its Barrier. Barriers absorb damage from all sources up to a specified amount.

  • Enhanced Ice Armor – While Ice Armor is active, your Mana Regeneration is increased by 25%.
  • Shimmering Ice Armor – This skill in Diablo IV differs from Diablo 3‘s talents by causing enemies that hit players while Ice Armor is active to have a 15% chance to be Frozen for 3 seconds.

(1/5) Ice Blades

Conjure ice blades for 6.0 seconds that rapidly slashes enemies for 31% damage and has a 20% chance to make them Vulnerable for 2 seconds.

  • Enhanced Ice Blades – Ice Blades have a 10% increased chance of making enemies Vulnerable.
  • Invoked Ice Blades – Killing a Vulnerable enemy increases your active Ice Blades’ duration by 1 second.

(1/5) Blizzard

This returning character class in Diablo 4 summons a frigid blizzard that deals 120% damage and continuously Chills enemies for 18% over 6 seconds.

  • Enhanced Blizzard – Blizzard’s duration is increased by 2 seconds.
  • Wizard’s Blizzard – While you have an active Blizzard, your Core Skills cost 10% less Mana.

Deep Freeze (Ultimate)

Encase yourself in ice, becoming Immune for 4 seconds, continually Chilling enemies for 20%. When Deep Freeze ends, Frozen enemies shatter by 200%. Casting Deep Freeze again ends the effect early.

  • Supreme Deep Freeze – When Deep Freeze ends, your active cooldowns are reduced by 50%.

The purpose of this build comes from trying to mitigate the Sorcerer’s very clear weakness against hordes of enemies that manage to get close. Skills like Frost Bolt and Ice Blades are designed to build Mana and deal damage respectfully, but the real champions of this list of Skill Points spent in Diablo IV are Ice Armor, Frozen Orb, and Blizzard. These abilities boost defense by causing the Chilled effect or freezing enemies, slowing down or halting movements entirely against the player, giving them time to set up powerful attacks like Deep Freeze.

Lightning Crowd Control Build

Enhancement(s)

(4/5) Spark

Launch a bolt of lightning that shocks an enemy 4 times, dealing 5% damage on each hit.

  • Enhanced Spark – Each time Spark hits, it has a 20% chance to hit three additional enemies dealing 3.5% damage. If there are no other enemies to hit, Spark instead deals 20% increased damage to its primary target.
  • Flickering Spark – Each time Spark forks, it has a 3% chance to spawn a Crackling Energy.

(3/5) Chain Lightning

Similar to skills seen in Diablo Immortal‘s Wizard, this unleashes lightning that deals 42% damage and chains up to 4 times.

  • Enhanced Chain Lightning – Chain Lightning bounces to 1 additional enemy.
  • Greater Chain Lightning – When Chain Lightning Critically Strikes, it has a 25% chance to spawn a Crackling Energy.

  • Enhanced Teleport – After Teleporting, take 30% less damage for 5 seconds.
  • Mystical Teleport – For 4 seconds after Teleporting, Crackling Energy deals x40% more damage.

(1/5) Lightning Spear

Conjure a crackling spear of lightning that seeks out enemies for 6.0 seconds, dealing 15% damage per hit.

  • Enhanced Lightning Spear – Lightning Spear has a 10% increased chance to critically strike against Stunned enemies.
  • Invoked Lightning Spear – After critically striking, Lightning Spear has a 5% increased stacking critical strike chance for its duration.

(2/5) Meteor

A great way to clear enemies and earn Renown rewards in Diablo 4, this skill summons a meteor that strikes the target location, dealing 50% damage and Burning the ground for 35% damage over 3 seconds.

  • Enhanced Meteor – If Meteor hits three or more enemies, there is a 30% chance an additional Meteor falls on the same location.
  • Wizard’s Meteor – Meteor’s impact Immobilizes enemies for 2 seconds.

Unstable Currents (Ultimate)

Lightning surges within you for 10 seconds. Whenever you cast a Lightning Skill, another random Lightning Skill is also cast.

  • Prime Unstable Currents – Unstable Currents increase Attack Speed by 25% while active.
  • Supreme Unstable Currents – While Unstable Currents are active, collecting Crackling Energy increases its duration by 0.25 seconds.

While players should be able to understand how Crackling Energy is created from skills such as Spark and Chain Lightning, the boost given to this effect from Unstable Currents and Teleport is not to be underestimated. Additionally, sorcerers that use Meteor, perhaps the strongest crowd control skill in the game, in synergy with these other lightning-based skills that are not only able to deal massive damage to enemy hordes but also evade attacks effectively. The best build for the Sorcerer by far for long-range magical combat in Diablo IV‘s Beta, players will always have ways to deal with crowds of foes through this class.
