Joseph Quinn was launched to stardom by the role of Eddie Munson in Stranger Things season 4, and it took some initiative from the actor himself to land the part. When they arrive at Hawkins High School, there’s no one that Mike and his friends look up to more than Eddie Munson. Eddie is the leader of the Hellfire Club, the school’s official Dungeons & Dragons club, and he’s much more confident and extroverted than the average D&D player. It’s tough for a new character to capture audiences late in the run of a beloved show, but Eddie Munson quickly became a fan-favorite icon on the Stranger Things cast.
Before he joined the cast of Stranger Things, Quinn had played Koner, a Stark soldier, in Game of Thrones season 7, episode 4, “The Spoils of War”, and Enjolras in BBC One’s adaptation of Les Misérables. He also starred alongside Letitia Wright in the Mangrove episode of Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe. Of course, Quinn didn’t rise to prominence until 2022 when he played the role of Eddie Munson in Stranger Things. Quinn’s Stranger Things role earned him a nomination for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Series. It took some involvement from Quinn himself to score this star-making role.
Joseph Quinn Used A Self-Taped Audition To Get Cast As Eddie Munson
Quinn told The Guardian that he sent the Stranger Things casting team a self-taped audition of Eddie Munson’s iconic introductory monologue in the cafeteria: “I auditioned by doing a self-tape of that speech.” The first scene Quinn performed as Eddie Munson in the audition ended up being one of the last scenes he shot. Considering how tough it can be to secure a major role in a hugely popular franchise like Stranger Things, Quinn was skeptical when he managed to score the role of Eddie Munson with ease: “No meetings, no chemistry reads, no protracted process… I was waiting for [creators] the Duffer brothers to realize they’d made a mistake.”
There’s A Fan Petition To Bring Eddie Back In Stranger Things Season 5
Similar to fan appeals to get Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones season 7 remade, there’s a Change.org petition to bring Eddie Munson back in Stranger Things season 5. This petition has been signed by hundreds of fans who want Netflix to bring the fan-favorite character back from the dead. Quinn has told Collider that, while he doesn’t know how the writers would pull it off, he would seize the opportunity to reprise his role as Eddie Munson on Stranger Things: “I don’t know how they’d do it, but yeah, I’d love to come back.”
The petition suggests a twist in which Eleven uses her superpowers to resurrect Eddie Munson. Much like when Force healing was added to the Star Wars canon, if such a power was introduced to Stranger Things lore, it would prompt questions about why it wasn’t used earlier to save characters like Bob Newby and Billy Hargrove. Still, there is a precedent for Stranger Things to bring back deceased characters with a dedicated fan following. When Jim Hopper was seemingly killed off, he was revealed to be incarcerated in a Russian prison. So, there is hope for the fans who want to see Eddie Munson in Stranger Things season 5.
