Warning: spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania are aheadThere’s a chance Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may have set up the introduction of a new Wasp. The third Ant-Man film is better regarded for how it pushed forward the ongoing multiversal narrative with the significant introduction of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. While it did receive some mixed reviews from critics, MCU fans, and casual audiences alike for missteps in story and pacing, one thing that’s been rightfully praised to no end is Major’s stellar performance. He utterly stole the show. Meanwhile, Evangeline Lilly, the eponymous Wasp in the film’s title, was barely there and only made an impact at the end of the climactic final battle.
Despite any issues that plagued the overall quality, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania set up a great deal for the MCU’s Multiverse Saga and beyond. From the Council of Kangs’ introduction to a theorized set-up for Annihilus and the Annihilation Wave even, the film is certainly highly consequential for the MCU. Currently, there’s no official word on an Ant-Man 4, but given the MCU’s trajectory, it seems likely. In the meanwhile, as the MCU progresses steadily toward Avengers: Secret Wars, both Ant-Man and Wasp must come back into play in significant ways. However, when the time does come for Ant-Man 4, the film could introduce a new, young hero.
Hank’s Previous Relationships Could Tease Nadia Van Dyne AKA Unstoppable Wasp
During Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Hank and Janet briefly discuss their romantic history while she was stuck in the Quantum Realm. She engaged with Krylar, and according to writer, Jeff Loveness, Janet and Kang had a romance, while Hank reportedly went on a few dates. He may have claimed that they were unsuccessful because they weren’t Janet, but in one case, given Hank’s proclivities in the comics, it may be all the MCU needs to introduce Nadia van Dyne. She was first introduced as Nadia Pym, the daughter of Hank and Maria Pym, in 2016, and a year later she would get her own series as the Unstoppable Wasp.
Maria is significant in Hank’s history as she would be his first wife and instrumental in inspiring his interest in ants, and after her death, she would be resurrected as MODAM – the female MODOK. Nadia herself has a troubled history as she was trained in the Red Room like the Black Widows and Winter Soldier. However, she was able to use Pym Particles to escape that fate and find her father, who was merged with Ultron at the time. Instead, she meets Janet Van Dyne, who quickly embraces her practically as her own daughter, and with hope of doing right by her father’s legacy, Nadia became the new Wasp.
Nadia became a premier young hero for Marvel, even joining the Avengers, and she started her own initiative to honor women’s impact on science, the Girls Initiative. She sets herself apart from her fellow Wasps, Janet and Hope, due to her training and upbringing in the Red Room. Intriguingly she also shares her Bipolar Disorder diagnosis with her father. While she’s only a relatively recent introduction in the comics, thanks to the simple discussion of past partners, she has a possible in into the MCU.
How Could Nadia Feature In The MCU?
Nadia’s MCU prospects are surprisingly vast. She could join the Young Avengers, which must form to combat Kang now. Nadia could act as the Wasp comp while Cassie’s Stinger operates like Ant-Man. Nevertheless, it might be a bit disconcerting to introduce a seemingly random new hero, especially one who isn’t significantly connected to the related storyline. As such, her best bet is probably to wait until Ant-Man 4 or a Wasp film, neither of which will likely happen by the end of the saga. Regardless, her introduction does possess the interesting possibility of progressing even Yelena’s narrative in saving the Black Widows, so they can do a lot with Nadia.
Given the timeline, Nadia’s eventual introduction might actually see her as a more seasoned character, as opposed to her young self in the comics. This would allow the MCU to explore not only her relationship with Hank and Janet as parents but also with Hope as sisters, all on a more mature level. Overall, Nadia’s inclusion could be a dynamic progression for various characters’ arcs. Plus, her abilities and cleverness could lead to some exciting combat sequences with the classic Ant-Man and Wasp flair. Therefore, Nadia would be an exciting addition to the MCU when the time comes.
