Sam Raimi Actively Developing Evil Dead Animated Show, Teases Campbell

Nearly a year after the project was first announced, Bruce Campbell reveals that Sam Raimi is actively developing the Evil Dead animated show. The long-running horror franchise has largely centered on Campbell’s ne’er-do-well Ashley J. Williams as he frequently finds himself pitted against the demonic forces known as Deadites summoned by the ancient Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. Campbell starred in the first three Evil Ded movies and returned for Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead, which was brought to an abrupt end following season 3’s cliffhanger.

During a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, Bruce Campbell offered an update on the highly anticipated Evil Dead animated show. The franchise star-turned-producer confirmed that Sam Raimi is still actively developing the series with the help of one of his brothers, though indicated production has not yet started on the show. See what Campbell said below:

All I can say is we’re actively pursuing it. Sam’s a busy guy. He had a big hit movie, so he’s got a lot on his plate, but he and his brother are actively shaping out the world. It’s one thing to get an animator and say, ‘Hey, animate this!’ You’ve got to know what you’re going to animate. I look forward to it, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.

Why Now Is The Perfect Time For An Evil Dead Animated Show

Bruce Campbell winking as Ash Williams in Evil Dead

Though it may not sound like much of an update, Campbell’s newest comments on the Evil Dead animated show does prove more promising than his last discussion, in which it was only in talks. With his docket now free again after last year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is comforting for longtime fans of the cult favorite franchise to know that original creator Sam Raimi is still at the helm in developing the concept and world for the animated revival.

At the time of writing, it’s unclear what the plot would be for the Evil Dead animated show, but one would hope it would act as a revival of Ash vs Evil Dead considering it left off on a major cliffhanger in which Campbell’s Ash wakes up in a post-apocalyptic future and partnered with an augmented woman working for the Knights of Sumeria. Army of Darkness nearly ended on a similarly dour note, only for Universal to change it due to wanting a more positive ending.

Campbell returning for an Evil Dead animated show now would be the perfect extension of the franchise, which is currently gearing up for its first theatrical installment in a decade with April’s Evil Dead Rise. Unlike Raimi’s films and series, it looks to be a far darker approach to the material, a tone welcomed with 2013’s Evil Dead, while others missed the dark comedy and slapstick present in the original trilogy. With such shows as The Boys Presents: Diabolical and Rick and Morty showing the extent of modern adult animation, and Campbell still game for voice work as Ash, now is as good a time as any for the Evil Dead animated show to come to life.
