Simu Liu stars as a hacker who instigates an artificial intelligence robot uprising in the Simulant trailer. Set in the not-too-distant future, Evan (Robbie Amell) wakes up in his home to find that he died in a tragic car accident and had his consciousness transplanted into an artificial body called a Simulant. As Evan struggles with his identity, he finds himself in the middle of an AI Simulant uprising influenced by genius hacker Casey (Liu).

The action-packed Simulant trailer (via Vertical) sees Evan locate Casey in hopes of unlocking his android restraints to feel more human.

However, Casey’s actions have caught the attention of law enforcement, seeing ambitious Agent Kessler, portrayed by Avatar’s Sam Worthington, lead a government manhunt to track the skilled hacker down.

Simulant Adds To The Popularity Of A.I. Sci-FI Films

Alongside Amell, Liu, and Worthington, Fast and Furious actor Jordana Brewster plays Evan’s wife, Faye, who approved the android simulant program on her husband. The remaining cast also includes Alicia Sanz, Mayko Nguyen, and Emmanuel Kabongo in supporting roles. April Mullen helms as the movie’s director, while Ryan Christopher Churchill is the writer.

Simulant continues a long trend of stories featuring artificial intelligence rising against their human creators and threatening the world. More recently, audiences were treated with innovative takes on the concept, including Netflix’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines and the television series The 100, where artificial intelligence A.L.I.E. starts a nuclear war to save the Earth. However, the popular narrative concept can be traced back decades and seen in I, Robot (2004), The Matrix (1999), The Terminator (1984), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), various Isaac Asimov stories, and even within Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818).

Although Simulant‘s take on the subject matter appears somewhat rote as it uses familiar tropes to explore themes covered in many films that came before, the role of Liu’s hacker can elevate the material if given the opportunity. However, if Simulant takes the time to truly explore why Casey chooses to defy the law to “free” androids, perhaps the upcoming movie can rise above the countless films in the genre. Simulant is set to premiere on DIRECTV on May 5 before heading to theaters and on-demand on June 2.
