The full extent of the High Table’s reach and power in the John Wick franchise is greater than it appears. The John Wick movies introduced the world to Keanu Reeves’s eponymous assassin, who is a living legend dubbed with the nickname of the Baba Yaga. John Wick also established a vast underworld of assassins hiding out in the open, with a governing body known as the High Table overseeing all laws assassins live by.
With John Wick battling the High Table in John Wick: Chapter 4, the power and resources of the organization have long since been firmly embedded in the John Wick franchise. However, the John Wick movies have only shown a fraction of the power the High Table commands. As it turns out, the High Table’s reach extends far beyond the assassin world.
John Wick’s High Table Seemingly Controls Governments & Law Enforcement
One thing that has become more noticeable as the John Wick franchise has progressed is the lack of any significant police presence throughout John’s dealings with violent criminals and assassins. Likewise, neither do governments at both local and national levels appear to have any concern about the open activity of assassins populating major cities, such as New York City. This might actually be an intentional sign by the John Wick movies that both governments and law enforcement are in league with — or at least influenced by — the High Table.
As per the High Table and the Elder’s rule in John Wick, assassins operate under strict laws while the Continental hotel chain acts as a neutral ground for them. Judging by their lack of intervention, governments and law enforcement may also be under the High Table’s thumb. The High Table might effectively operate as a kind of sovereign nation, with its laws intended to maintain peace with the larger world. If so, this could really explain the lack of any kind of police or government intervention into context, with assassins living under the High Table possessing a kind of diplomatic immunity of sorts.
Will John Wick Be Able To Defeat The High Table?
The High Table has been gradually unveiled throughout the course of the John Wick movies. By John Wick: Chapter 3, Parabellum, the power exerted by the High Table is clearer than ever. With John Wick and the Bowery King’s High Table showdown in John Wick: Chapter 4, they were already facing an uphill battle, but that could be amplified with the High Table potentially having police units and world governments on their side.
John and the Bowery King reporting their monolithic enemy to the U.S. government would be of little help, if the High Table already has governments worldwide in their pocket. Indeed, John and the Bowery King would likely need to avoid seeking out any such assistance, since they would be more likely to encounter an agent placed by the High Table to eliminate them. With the amount of sway the High Table potentially commands, this ensures that defeating them and escaping the John Wick franchise’s bleak ending promise will be John’s greatest challenge ever.
