The latest episode of The Mandalorian is something of a side-quest, largely removed from the main plot. That said, “Guns for Hire” is also surprising audiences with its major, surprising cameos, including but not limited to Christopher Llyod.

Christopher Lloyd appears in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6 as Commissioner Helgait, the man responsible for overseeing reprogrammed battle droids on the former Separatist world of Plazir-15. Din Djarin’s complicated history with droids set the tone for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6, which revisited a lot of elements from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. That includes not only the battle droids but the idea of Separatists working against the Republic – even after the fall of the Empire.

Christopher Lloyd’s Commissioner Helgait Was Not Seen In The Clone Wars

The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6 eventually revealed Commissioner Helgait was the one response for Plazir-15’s malfunctioning droids. Helgait was a Separatist, someone who believed Count Dooku to be a visionary, and was therefore opposed to restoring the New Republic even after the Empire had fallen. He may have been a Separatist, with dialogue hinting he may have even crossed paths with Count Dooku, but Commissioner Helgait does not appear in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He’s an entirely original character created for The Mandalorian. The same applies to the other big cameos in “Guns for Hire”, namely Jack Black’s Captain Bombardier and Lizzo’s Duchess.

Star Wars tends to revisit newly introduced characters in other media, so it would be no surprise to see Christopher Llyod’s Commissioner Helgait appear again in a Star Wars story set around the Clone Wars’ timeline. Fennec Shand, for example, was introduced in The Mandalorian season 1 as a highly experienced bounty hunter, and reappeared in animation in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 1 decades earlier. It’s perhaps significant that The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6 even felt a bit like a legacy episode from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, even in terms of pacing.

Christopher Lloyd’s The Mandalorian Character Shows What Happened To Dooku’s Separatists

It was surprising to see a Separatist character in the post-Return of the Jedi timeline, as there have been three forms of galactic government since the Clone Wars – the original Republic, the Galactic Empire, and the New Republic. Interestingly, there was never a true winner of the Clone Wars, as both sides were just tools in Palpatine’s bigger plan to take over the galaxy. Technically speaking, the remaining leaders of the Separatist Alliance were killed by Anakin, who had already taken the Darth Vader name by that point, before Palpatine announced the formation of the Galactic Empire. In other words, the Separatists lost the war to the Republic first.

In practical terms, the aftermath of the Clone Wars was terrible for both sides. The Republic was no more, and while those loyal to the Republic wanted a centralized government, an Empire ruled by former Chancellor Palpatine was a bit too much. The Separatists, on the other hand, had to give up any dreams of individual galactic governments now that the galaxy was being ruled by an even more centralized power. Christopher Llyod’s The Mandalorian character is a reminder that there are still Separatists in the Star Wars galaxy even after the Empire, just one of many problems the New Republic has to deal with.

New episodes of The Mandalorian release Wednesdays on Disney+.
